That does not mean their current approach deserves our blind support. Their reasons are their own, outside Apple we can do little more than guess, and the concrete issues can make the point without conjecture.īefore we start, I do want to recognize that the Safari/WebKit team are working hard, and I do desperately want them to succeed! Chromium's domination is bad for everybody, and building a popular browser that's focused on privacy & security, as they appear to be trying to do, is a fantastic goal. There have been other arguments made too, including much speculation about why Safari might be killing the web - is this motivated by protecting Apple's app store profits? I'm going to ignore those suggestions entirely, and stick to concrete problems. We'll dig into each of these points in more detail in a second, and then we'll talk about what Safari could do instead. Refusing to engage with the contentious API proposals for real use cases doesn't actually protect the web anyway - it just pushes web developers and users into the arms of Chromium. The largest Safari complaint is unrelated to experimental features from the Chrome team: it's the showstopping bugs in implemented features, made worse by Safari's slow release cycle. Most features that Safari hasn't implemented have no hint of security, privacy or performance concerns, and they've been implemented in every other browser already.More specifically, Safari's approach isn't protecting the web from bloat & evil Google influence, because: ![]() That is worth further discussion, because it's widespread, and wrong. I don't want to rehash the basics of that, but I have seen some interesting rebuttals, most commonly: Safari is actually protecting the web, by resisting adding unnecessary and experimental features that create security/privacy/bloat problems. There's been a lot of discussion recently about how "Safari is the new IE" ( 1, 2, 3, 4, 5). ![]() ![]() ![]() There isn’t the greatest variety when it comes to weapons, with your arsenal largely revolving around a pretty standard assault rifle, shotgun, and pistol trio. Movement feels almost as responsive and crisp as Respawn’s classic as well, which is no mean feat considering how satisfying traversal in Titanfall 2 feels, with snappy and responsive gunplay complimenting the parkour elements perfectly. ![]() ![]() Part of that feeling is undoubtedly due to Titanfall 2 seeming a clear inspiration for the feel of the gunplay and maneuverability that makes Bright Memory: Infinite such a hoot to play.ĭouble jumps, wall running, grappling hooks, and lethal parkour-filled obstacle courses are all par for the course here as you dart around the various levels taking on wave after wave of enemy. Over the course of its two-hour runtime, Bright Memory: Infinite provided me with more fun than I’ve had with a single-player shooter since Respawn blessed us with Titanfall 2’s wonderful campaign. Thankfully, the gameplay is where Bright Memory: Infinite really sings. ![]() With a dedicated writer or two and a decent editor, the gameplay wouldn’t have had to do as much heavy lifting as it does. Plot points are glossed over within seconds, character motivations are non-existent, and I can’t help but think that as impressive as Bright Memory: Infinite is overall having come from a single developer, it’s an experience that would have greatly benefited from solid creative input. There’s also a supernatural element at play, with mythological enemies being thrown into the mix early on, but again, I was never exactly sure as to why Sheila and Lin’s timeline was being invaded by these beings, only that they were somehow linked to the aforementioned black hole. There is the main antagonist, General Lin, but his motives were never made apparent, which is a shame as it reduces the waves of Lin’s goons that you’ll be mowing down to nothing more than mere cannon fodder. Stepping into the boots of Super Nature Research Organisation agent Sheila, players are tasked with investigating a black hole that (from what I could gather) is in danger of being used by a rival military organization for nefarious means that were never quite clear. If I had one concern going into Bright Memory: Infinite, it’s that I thought we were perhaps looking at a glorified tech demo, but, thankfully, that’s far from the case, and Bright Memory: Infinite provides a concise and heart-pounding romp that manages to prove worthwhile despite an extremely short runtime.īefore I start gushing about what a blast Bright Memory: Infinite is to play, I want to clarify something – and that is if you’re someone who values coherent narrative and deep world-building in your video games, you won’t find that here, unfortunately. Even more impressive is that it comes from a one-man development team, FYQD Studio a fact that I had to keep reminding myself of over the course of my playthrough. Playing the finished product, it’s easy to see why it was chosen to lead the charge that year, as quite frankly, it’s absolutely beautiful to look at and contains production values that would make plenty of AAA studios blush. Bright Memory: Infinite Review – Shine On, You Crazy Diamondīright Memory: Infinite, a title handpicked by Microsoft to kick off a showcase for the Xbox Series X back in May 2020, is finally here. ![]() ![]() Such number transformations are possible, because colors (visible colors seen by humans) can be defined objectively as coordinates in a color space that covers human vision, like the CIE 1931 color space. This is where color management comes into play: if applications know the actual gamut of that monitor, they can translate this “0,255,0” sRGB value to another set of RGB values that represent the same color (or fairly close) in a bigger color space: But if you do the same thing in a wide-gamut monitor configured to show its full gamut, that “0,255,0” RGB value will show native gamut green 255 and it will look over-saturated. With a common monitor (sRGB monitor) you can output its contents to the monitor directly, without conversions or color management, and you will see the green color that is “fairly close” to color information stored in that JPEG file. For example, you have an sRGB 300×300 JPEG image that is just a green background (RGB values “0,255,0” in sRGB). The first thing photographers need to know is that their wide-gamut monitors are meant to be used in color-managed applications: applications that work in a color managed environment. 2) Color Management and Color Coordinates That’s the main reason that leads professionals and photo hobbyists into seeking monitors with a wider gamut which covers a large percentage of color spaces like AdobeRGB 1998 or eciRGBv2. ![]() This color space is not able to cover colors printable with current technology like offset printing or a domestic inkjet printer – there are colors like cyan-turquoise green that are printable with such devices, but cannot be shown on an sRGB monitor. For historical reasons, sRGB and other similar color spaces like Rec.709 cover the same gamut (subset of visible colors) as CRT monitors. The Internet and most computer content is meant for this particular color space. Common monitors try to cover a minimum standard color space known as “ sRGB” with their red, green and blue emitted light. This particular article is just an introduction to cover the basics of calibration and profiling, without going into too many technical details.Īs you might already know, monitors, TVs, mobile devices, etc., can show us colors using a mixture or Red, Green and Blue (RGB) light. ![]() But first, some basic concepts need to be understood. Due to the complexity of the topic, our team at Photography Life requested help from a real expert, who will be providing detailed information on how to properly calibrate monitors for photography needs. ![]() Having a badly-calibrated monitor is not only counter-productive, it is also potentially harmful for one’s business, especially when dealing with paying customers and clients. With so many different hardware and software components, color profiles, bit depth and other related terminologies, one can get quickly confused and lost, potentially ending up with a rather poor working environment. The subject of monitor calibration and profiling can be quite difficult to understand not only for a beginner, but also for professionals working in the field. ![]() ![]() ![]() Kayakers paddled around the flower pot rocks at high tide, which was another thing we’ll have to add to our list for next time we visit. But the view from the platform at high tide wasn’t bad at all! We chose to walk the beach at Alma during low tide and then see Hopewell rocks at hide tide, but for our next visit, we will have to plan the opposite. When we arrived, the tide had come in already, and they had just closed access to the beach! Some clever planning is needed to see both low and high tide in one day, or you can always stay in the area for two days and come back, since the admission pass is good for two days. One thing we learned is that you must check the tides to either walk on the beach at low tide or see the beach and rocks flooded during high tide. At high tide, you have to enjoy the view from the metal stairs or from the top of the platform. They open the entrance to the beach at low tide and shut it down near high tide. There was a timetable posted at the opening of the stairs down to the beach. ![]() As you can see, all of the scenic points are quick to remind visitors of the tides! On the way to Hopewell Rocks, we drove past beautiful Waterside Beach and Cape Enrage.Īfter marching on the rocks and rough sand, we took the chance to relax a bit on the cool gravel beach.Ī short drive farther up the hill to find Fundy’s Cape Enrage yielded great views. Tide planning for your visit is quite important and you will see why as you read on to our next stop! That said, you do have to be very careful about going out too far, or you may get very wet swimming or wading back to shore while the tide rushes in. It was a bit eerie how fast the water came in. Though it’s pretty incredible to think that where I was walking is normally deep enough for boats to pass during high tide.Īfter 10 minutes, I reached the edge of the ocean, and I almost made it to a sand bar until I realized the tide was already coming in––and quickly. The farther out I went, the muddier it became, and my so-called “waterproof” hiking boots were loaded with mud. It was cool to take a long walk out onto the beach to the ocean, but it’s best to wear rubber boots and keep an eye on the tide schedules. ![]() On the way back from our walk, we decided to stop by the Alma Lobster Shop for lunch. ![]() The boats parked in sand and rocks (due to the extreme changing tides) was an amazing sight, and our first experience of why the tides are so famous in the Bay of Fundy. Alma is a quaint town with restaurants, a nice beach, and a marina, and we got a good view of the boats docket in the sand during low tide. The next morning, we made the short drive to Alma to walk the beach at low tide. We stayed at the Chignecto Campground, which had larger wooded campsites for RVs. Our Canada trip started when we crossed over the border from Maine, continuing on to Saint John, New Brunswick where we stopped at the market to get some Canadian loonies and lunch before heading on to Fundy National Park. As for the Cabot Trail, we had a bit of a slow start, but the coastal scenes of Cape Breton Island didn’t disappoint! This time we did our research and headed out to experience the tides on the Canadian side of New Brunswick firsthand. In the past, we had heard about both the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia, and the Cabot Trail, but didn’t know much beyond that the tides are pretty incredible, and that Cabot Trail is one of the most scenic drives in Canada.
